Very encouraging match from Emma. Excellent shot quality, with pace and accuracy and very solid defence. Pegula had to play inspired tennis to win the second set.

Losing the second set was a gut punch for Emma, who didn't recover.

Emma just needs to get a little better to win these close ones.

This match is the clearest sign that the work with Roig is paying off.

Yeah I am happy of emma level and improvement for first 2 sets. This is very high tennis level

Yes emma did not have pegula fitness in 3rd set, but Pegula will outlast many players so no shame in that.

I agree. Just hope she can recover from losing 6 match points in what 2 weeks?

Everything seemed improved. She just had the energy sucked out of her after the 2nd set.

Nah, this isn't about Jess. It's all on Emma.
No need to be so critical, emma was playing a much higher level to an in form JPEG.

For 2 sets emma was brilliant, and even in the TB she did the right things and Jpeg won rather than emma being passive

Ema run out of steam in 3rd, so be it, but I am happy with emma level and progression.

So many DTL, hitting in corners and going for it, do we expect emma to change to this way of tennis in a few weeks ? NO. but I liked what I saw

Emma giving up is nothing new, she always has that in her. It's the worst part of her on court attitude.

Roig has so much work to do.
Emma has a lot of qualities but I've never got the impression that she's really up for a battle.

Yes, you're right. Jess won the second set tie break with a few inspired shots to save the match points. Not surprised the third set was so one sided, Emma just wasn't in it mentally. But really Emma should have won the second set without the tie break, Emma was on top early in the second set and Jess was visibly frustrated but Emma gave her hope of a comeback after which she played better tennis.

As always some ppl will try to turn this choke into something positive…
Today was a copy of what she did in Seoul, 5-2 up in the tiebreak and then can’t finish it off. Poor serves, hitting a point that could’ve finished the match straight at the opponent. I hope Roig is not as delusional as some ppl are here and is honest with her that those mental collapses aren’t normal, can’t keep happening and will give her opponents sm confidence even when they’re close to defeat

Emma's tie break record must be really negative now. She used to be really good at this :\
And how many has she lost from winning positions. Joint, Sabalenka, Krejcikova, Jess I can think of off the top mf my head. Nearly everyone of those she was ahead and then produced some poor serves

Playing brilliantly for almost two sets is not a winning strategy, unfortunately, though I generally agree. Pegula played very well in that tie-break. But that shouldn't be enough.

I don’t think it’s a choke, in the sense I agree Pegula won the TB rather than Emma losing it, people will point to 2-5 but that was only 1 mini break.

However, she does have an attitude issue which is centered around who she perceives as top players. If Busca had won the second set tie break no way would she had played how she did against Jess in the third.

Hopefully she realises it’s more of a self fulfilling prophecy rather than reflection of her game and takes long term view, because she was very close to winning today

Yes - but as soon as she lost the tie break she collapsed
I see. So the issue is she was not able to close out the match from a winning position and then fell apart. Emma used to say tennis is all mental and her strength was her mentality. However, its difficult to put losing 3 MPs behind you when the same thing happened in the previous tournament.

The sad part is, every player will now know that it's never over for them, or maybe they already do, maybe Jess knew. Emma has made life difficult for herself. Until she changes and starts winning third sets again. I agree with Emma, as i have said before, It's all mental. And there are times, like when you lose match points and lose the set, that you need to stop thinking about it, put it behind you and just play. Not easy I'm sure, but she has to be able to do it.
Edit: And in fairness to Emma, after watching the 2nd and 3rd sets, i think she played very well, and even in the 3rd set was playing very well, but got a few bad breaks and Jess level went up after she somehow won the 2nd set.
